Flat tire on a Tesla in Austin

Do not drive on it. Tesla ships no spare and the tires are not run-flats, so a flat ruins the sidewall within a mile. Get off the lane, stay with the car, and call a mobile tire service that carries jack pads and can patch a foam-lined tire from the inside.

Why a Tesla flat is not like any other flat

On most cars a flat is an inconvenience with a fallback: there is a spare under the boot floor, or at least a can of sealant and a compressor. A Tesla has neither as standard. Every model leaves the factory without a spare, and the factory tires are not run-flats, which means the car has no way to move once a tire is down.

That is not an oversight. A spare is fifty pounds of weight and a cubic foot of space that Tesla spent on range instead, on the assumption that roadside help reaches you faster than a spare would get you to a shop. In a city with mobile tire service that assumption holds. The part owners are rarely told is what to do in the hour before that help arrives.

The short version: stop, stay, call. Everything below is the long version.

What to do in the first five minutes

The single most expensive mistake is driving on it. A deflated tire on a 4,400 lb car destroys its own sidewall in well under a mile, and once the sidewall is gone a repair is off the table: a $75 patch becomes a tire, and on a 20 or 21 inch wheel that is a different order of number.

  1. 01

    Hazards on, off the lane

The shoulder, an exit, a parking lot. If the tire will not carry the car that far, stop where it is safe to stop rather than where it is convenient.

  2. 02

Stay in the car if traffic is close

On I-35 or MoPac with cars passing at seventy, the safest place is belted inside with the doors on the traffic side shut. On a quiet street, out and behind a barrier is better.

  3. 03

Read the pressure on the screen

Tesla shows live pressure per wheel. Tap the car icon, then Service. A tire reading zero is flat; a tire reading twenty-something is losing air slowly and may hold long enough to reach somewhere better.

  4. 04

Call with the size and the location

The size is on the sidewall and on the sticker inside the driver's door. A photo of either works. Send the location as a map pin rather than describing a stretch of highway.

Can a Tesla tire be repaired?

Usually, and by the same rule as any other tire: a puncture in the tread, no wider than a quarter inch, not overlapping another repair. Damage to the shoulder or the sidewall is not repairable on any car, and it is what most Tesla calls turn out to be, because a low-profile tire on a heavy car takes a kerb badly.

The Tesla-specific part is the foam. Most Tesla factory tires carry a strip of sound-deadening foam bonded to the inside of the tread, which is why the cabin is as quiet as it is. That foam sits exactly where a patch needs to go. It is not a problem for a proper repair: the tire comes off the rim, the foam is cut back around the hole, the liner is buffed and a combination patch and plug goes on. The tire loses a few square inches of foam and nothing else.

It is a problem for the other kind of repair. A string plug pushed in from outside, without taking the tire off the rim, cannot seat through the foam and cannot be inspected from the inside. Any shop that offers to plug a Tesla tire without dismounting it is guessing.

  • In the tread, small, single: repairable, and the foam is not an obstacle.
  • In the shoulder or sidewall: not repairable, on any car, by anyone.
  • Driven on while flat: check the sidewall for a scuffed or blistered band before assuming a repair.
  • Sealant already used: it coats the foam and has to be cleaned out, which adds time and sometimes rules the repair out.

The battery is the floor

A Tesla is lifted at four marked points along the sill and nowhere else. Between those points is the battery pack, and a jack saddle placed on the pack can crack its casing. That is a repair bill no tire is worth, and it is the reason a proper Tesla tire call starts with jack pads: small pucks that locate in the lift point and keep the jack off everything around it.

If somebody arrives to change a Tesla tire without pads, that is the moment to ask. It is a twenty dollar accessory and it is the difference between a routine job and a very expensive afternoon.

The other number worth knowing is the torque. Tesla specifies 175 Nm, or 129 lb-ft, for the wheel lug nuts on Model 3, Y, S and X. That is set with a torque wrench, not with an impact gun and an opinion.

Why Tesla tires wear out faster

Two reasons, and both are just physics. A Model Y weighs about 4,400 lb against roughly 3,300 for a petrol crossover of the same footprint, and it delivers its full torque from a standstill rather than winding up to it. The tread does more work per mile and it wears accordingly.

Pressure matters more than usual for the same reason. The placard on a Model 3 or Model Y asks for around 42 psi cold, which is higher than most drivers expect, and running even a few psi under adds heat, wear and range loss at once. Austin summers make that worse: pressure rises with heat, so a tire set correctly in a hundred degree afternoon is under-inflated the next cold morning.

Tesla asks for rotation every 6,250 miles, or sooner if the tread depth differs by 2/32 inch between tires. On a staggered Model S or X, where the rear tires are wider than the fronts, they cannot be rotated front to back at all, which is worth knowing before a shop quotes you one tire and then explains you need two.

What it costs in Austin

The labour is the same as any car. An inside patch repair starts at $75, a used tire at $100, a new one at $150, and there is no night, weekend or call-out surcharge on any of it.

The tire is where a Tesla costs more, and it costs more everywhere, not just here. A 19, 20 or 21 inch tire with an EV load rating is a more expensive tire than a 16 inch one, whoever fits it. The figure for your size is quoted on the phone before anyone drives, so it can be compared against a shop before the van moves.

Tesla tire service

Questions about this service

Can I drive a short distance on a flat Tesla to get somewhere safer?

Only if the alternative is unsafe, and only at walking pace for the shortest possible distance. A deflated tire on a car this heavy destroys its own sidewall in well under a mile, which turns a repairable puncture into a new tire. If the car is out of the traffic lane, the cheaper choice is always to stop and call.

Does Tesla roadside assistance cover a flat?

Tesla roadside will usually tow the car or fit a loaner wheel where one is available, which means the car leaves and comes back. A mobile tire service repairs or replaces the tire where the car is standing. They are not the same service and plenty of owners use both: whichever answers first at two in the morning.

Do I need the exact factory tire?

You need the size and the load rating on the door placard, and on a staggered Model S or X you need the right size for that axle. The brand can change. What should not change is the load index: an EV-rated tire carries the extra weight of the battery, and a cheaper tire with a lower index is the wrong tire even if the numbers before it match.

My Tesla shows a pressure warning but the tire looks fine.

Check it cold with a gauge before assuming a sensor fault. Pressure falls about 1 psi for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit, so the first cold morning of the autumn sets off warnings all over Austin. If the reading is genuinely low and keeps dropping after you add air, there is a puncture, and a slow leak is the easiest kind to repair because nothing has been driven on flat.
