Austin has more Teslas per block than almost anywhere, and every one of them left the factory without a spare. That is the whole reason a tire van exists.

What is different about a Tesla tire call?

  1. 01

    No spare in the car

Tesla ships every model without a spare, and the factory tires are not run-flats. A flat means the car stops where it is. We come to it with the repair, or a tire in the size, so the car never rides on the rim and never rides a tow truck.

  2. 02

    Foam inside the tire

Most Tesla tires have a strip of acoustic foam bonded inside. A plug pushed in from outside cannot seat properly through it. We take the tire off the rim, cut the foam back around the hole, and patch from the inside, which is the repair we recommend on any car and the only sound one on this one.

  3. 03

    Lift points, not the battery

The floor of a Tesla is the battery. The car is lifted only at its four marked points, with jack pads between the jack and the sill, and every lug nut goes back to Tesla’s figure with a torque wrench: 175 Nm, or 129 lb-ft.

What size tires does my Tesla take?

The sizes most Teslas in Austin are running. The sticker inside the driver’s door is the authority for yours; the tire size tool on this site reads it for you.

EV tires carry extra load rating (XL or HL) for the weight of the battery. When we source a tire for a Tesla, it matches the load index on the placard, not just the size.

Tire size

Model by model

  • Tesla Model 3 tires in Austin

    235/45R18 · 235/40R19 · 235/35R20

The Tesla we see most in Austin. The 18 inch Aero wheel runs a 45 series sidewall that survives a kerb; the 19 and 20 inch wheels do not, and most of our Model 3 calls are sidewall damage from a pothole or a kerb strike. The placard asks for 42 psi cold.

  • Tesla Model Y tires in Austin

    255/45R19 · 255/40R20 · 255/35R21

Heavier than the 3 and on a wider tire, so it wears faster and it is less forgiving when it is under-inflated. The 21 inch Überturbine wheel and its 35 series sidewall is the one that gets damaged; we carry 19 and 20 inch sizes most often. The placard asks for 42 psi cold.

  • Tesla Model S tires in Austin

    245/45R19 · 265/35R21 front / 295/30R21 rear

The 21 inch fitment is staggered, wider at the back than the front, which means the tires cannot be rotated front to rear and a single damaged tire has to be matched on its own axle. Worth knowing before you are quoted one tire and offered two.

  • Tesla Model X tires in Austin

    265/45R20 front / 275/45R20 rear · 265/35R22 front / 285/35R22 rear

The heaviest Tesla on the road until the Cybertruck, and staggered on both fitments. The 22 inch wheel with a 35 series sidewall on a 5,400 lb car is the least forgiving combination Tesla sells; a pothole on MoPac takes the tire and sometimes the wheel with it.

  • Tesla Cybertruck tires in Austin

    285/65R20

One size, an all-terrain, and a very heavy truck. It needs a jack rated for the weight and the right lift points, which is what the van carries; the tire itself is a conventional tubeless tire and is repaired or replaced like any other.

What does a Tesla tire cost?

The same starting prices as any car: an inside patch repair from $75, a plug from $50 where it is appropriate, a used tire from $100 and a new one from $150. Tesla sizes sit above the new-tire starting figure because the tires do; you get the exact number on the phone before the van moves, and it does not change at night or on weekends.

Where we see them

Giga Texas sits in Del Valle, ten minutes from our base in South Austin, and the metro around it runs on Model 3s and Model Ys: Mueller garages, the Domain, the tech campuses along MoPac and 183, the commuter lots in Round Rock and Cedar Park. We work all of it, at any hour.

Tesla questions

Can a Tesla tire with foam inside be patched?

Yes. Most Tesla factory tires carry a strip of sound-deadening foam bonded inside the tread. For an inside patch the foam is cut back around the puncture, the liner is buffed and the patch and plug go on as normal; the tire loses a few square inches of foam and nothing else. A string plug from outside cannot be done properly through that foam, which is one more reason we take the tire off the rim.

My Tesla has no spare. What do I do with a flat?

Do not drive on it: the factory tires are not run-flats and a flat destroys the sidewall within a mile, turning a $75 repair into a $250 tire. Pull off the lane, stay with the car and call. We bring the repair or a tire in your size to where the car is, which is what a spare would have done, without the second trip.

Do you lift the car on the battery?

Never. A Tesla is lifted only at its four lift points, with jack pads that keep the jack off the battery pack. Lifting anywhere else can crack the pack casing, which is a repair no tire is worth. The pads are on the van and go on before the jack does.

Do you carry Tesla tire sizes?

The common ones, 235 and 255 widths in 18 to 21 inch, are sourced same day from Austin distributors in EV-rated load ranges, and used tires in those sizes come and go. Send the size from the sidewall or the door placard, or send a photo, and you get a yes or a no and a price before anyone drives.

Why do my Tesla tires wear out so fast?

Weight and torque. A Model Y is around 4,400 lb and puts its full torque down from a standstill, so the tread works harder than on a petrol car of the same size. Pressure matters more than usual: the placard on a Model 3 or Y calls for around 42 psi, and running low adds heat and wear fast. Rotation every 6,000 miles or so is what evens it out.

Can you handle a Cybertruck?

Yes. It runs a 285/65R20 all-terrain and it is heavy, so it wants the right jack and the right lift points, both of which the van carries. The tire itself is a conventional tubeless tire and is repaired or replaced the same way as any other.
